As we prepare to welcome the beginning of a new year, this is the season to refresh and reset. You might be making resolutions or thinking about your goals for 2015. But are you cultivating an abundance mindset? Or, perhaps without realizing it, are you staying focused on scarcity?
I was recently inspired by a wonderful podcast about the abundance mindset and creating opportunities throughout your life. The abundance mindset is an essential element of a rich life.
I have seen it time and time again in my life and career: what you give will come back to you, many times over. That holds true for what you give yourself. Are you cultivating a belief in opportunity and possibility, focusing on fulfillment, and creating opportunities for success? Are you taking charge of your future and building your richest life?
While replacing not-so-good habits with healthier ones is always a good idea in theory, you don’t invite a sense of abundance and richness into your life by focusing on what you don’t want or “shouldn’t” do. This kind of negative framing can have a vast impact on your life, especially when it comes to your finances. Your mindset is hugely influential in how you handle your money.
So many people frame their resolutions in the negative – what you can’t do, what you can’t have. What if you re-framed these in a positive light? How much more richness, openness, and possibility could you bring into your life? Thinking about what you can do is not only a lot more fun, it’s more powerful and more likely to help you create long-term change (the right plan is the one you’ll actually want to stick with).
For example:
“I need to spend less” becomes “I will pay my future self from every paycheck.”
“I will budget every dollar” becomes “I will set up a simple, smart money plan so I am free to focus on things other than money.”
“I have to close my retirement gap” becomes “I have the power to change my financial reality, and I’m going to tap into it.”
Your thoughts, beliefs, and values about money color your financial reality and shape your financial future. A rich life goes far beyond money: It’s not about your net worth, but your self-worth.
This is the power of the abundance mindset.
